What is a Substance Use Disorder SUD?

This class of drugs includes, among others, heroin, morphine, codeine, methadone, fentanyl and oxycodone. Stimulants include amphetamines, meth (methamphetamine), cocaine, methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta, others) and amphetamine-dextroamphetamine (Adderall XR, Mydayis). They’re often used and misused in search of a “high,” or to boost energy, to improve performance at work or school, or to lose weight or control appetite. Even after you’ve completed initial treatment, ongoing treatment and support can help prevent a relapse. Follow-up care can include periodic appointments with your counselor, continuing in a self-help program or attending a regular group session. Several different medications are given while a person is going through detox; these drugs help safely manage a person’s withdrawal symptoms.

Depending on the severity, a healthcare provider may offer medications to lessen the effects of withdrawal symptoms, as they can be rough physically and mentally. Therefore, early exposure to substances may change the brain in ways that increase the risk for psychological disorders. Early symptoms of a mental disorder may point to an increased risk for drug use later.
